Aug, 2001 : SMSC Introduces New Advanced I/O Controller for Servers
📅 - Standard Microsystems Corporation (smsc.com) today announcedthe availability of the LPC47S45x, its latest Advanced Input/OutputController designed specifically for PC server applications.
The LPC47S45x is based on SMSC's Super I/O design and includes importantplatform management features required of the PC server architecture. TheLPC47S45x is designed to be compatible with server platforms using eitherIntel or ServerWorks system logic.
"The attributes of the LPC47S45x, as well as its compatibility withServerWorks' new Grand Champion HE architecture, has resulted in itsselection for PC OEM designs and will result in broader appeal, leading tomore major design wins with this product," said Robert Hollingsworth,Standard Microsystems' senior VP, sales and marketing , Advanced I/OProducts.
With its platform management features, Standard says the LPC47S45x isuniquely suited to PC server designs. The real time clock embedded in theLPC47S45x provides the flexibility of a primary or secondary timing sourcefor the platform. The X-Bus of the LPC47S45x interfaces to as many as fourexternal, 8-bit data bus devices and is capable of performing I/O cyclesinitiated by either the SMBus or the LPC interface.
The LPC47S45x includes dual System Management Bus controllers. One isarranged as a master/slave controller and the other is set up as a slaveonly device used to access internal SMBus Registers and the I/O devices onthe X-Bus. The system designer, therefore, has the ability to communicatewith peripheral devices attached to the X-Bus from an external hostcontroller. The X-Bus provides the proper timing to interface to popularLCD controllers and the System Management Controller can tri-state the COM2pins via the SMBus to gain control of a modem attached to these pins. TheLPC47S45x is equipped with two Power On Elapsed Time Counters to monitor thelength of time VCC and VTR are active. The counter values are accessible byeither the LPC Bus or SMBus and are especially valuable in monitoring systemstatus and managing time related maintenance activities. Fan control isaccomplished with two tachometers for speed monitoring and two independentlyprogrammable pulse width modulators for fan speed control.
Based on the desktop I/O architecture pioneered by SMSC, the 3.3VLPC-compatible LPC47S45x includes complete legacy I/O functionality such asan 8042-based keyboard controller, a floppy disk controller with enhanceddigital data separator, serial and parallel ports, plus infrared support. The LPC47S45x also includes system control functionality such as parallel toserial IRQ conversion circuitry, an X-Bus interface for System ManagementController, general purpose I/O pins, and maskable hardware wake-up events. The LPC47S45x is packaged in an industry standard 128-pin quad flat pack(QFP) package and is priced at US$8.25 in production quantities. Samplesof the LPC47S45x are available immediately, as are a full suite ofdemonstration and development tools - documentation, evaluation boards andutility software, as well as field application engineering support.
