Williams Communications to Teams With Cisco to Launch IP-VPN

📅 - Williams Communications (williamscommunications.com), a leading broadband provider for high-bandwidth customers, yesterday announced that it will launch multi-protocol label switching (MPLS)-enabled virtual private network service on its Internet protocol network in first quarter 2002. In addition, Williams Communications announced that it has received Cisco Powered Network status from Cisco Systems Inc. (cisco.com) for its IP-VPN service offering.

Using Cisco 12000 Internet series routers, Williams Communications plans toextend the reach of its IP network into additional U.S. markets. Uponcompletion of this expansion, Williams Communications will operate one ofthe nation's largest Cisco-powered IP networks.
"With VPN service, Williams Communications customers will experience thebenefits of a private network without the financial responsibilities thataccompany owning a network. We will provide a seamless, turn-key solutionwith the cost-efficiency and reliability our customers expect from WilliamsCommunications," said Joe Turcotte, vice president of IP services forWilliams Communications' network unit.
"Recent studies estimate that the VPN market will grow from about $1.5billion this year to more than $10 billion by 2005, which reinforces ourdecision to enter this market. VPN service will enable WilliamsCommunications to reach new customers and will complement our already robustsuite of products and services," Turcotte added.
VPNs based on MPLS, however, have recently come under fire by AT&T Labsresearchers, who warn that it is a complicated and sometimes riskytechnology, as reported in a Network World article(http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2001/0806mpls.html).
Williams Communications is working closely with Cisco to deploy MPLS on itsIP network to enable improved Quality of Service and traffic engineering onthe network. Additionally, Williams Communications is implementing anInter-Autonomous System VPN solution that will allow service providers, running separate autonomous systems, to jointly offer VPN services to thesame end customer, providing seamless connectivity for customers.
Williams says its IP network is a nationwide, legacy-free, OC-48 backbonenetwork using packet-over-SONET technology to offer customers highlyscalable and cost-efficient access to the Internet.
In the recently published Boardwatch/Keynote Backbone Web Hosting Index, theWilliams Communications IP network excelled, significantly outperforming itsclosest competitors. In the survey, Williams Communications placed higherthan any other next-generation network carrier in the overall measurementcategory.
