Aug, 2001 : Stream Allies with GNE to Deliver Converged Services
📅 - Stream Intelligent Networks Corp. (stream.ca) announcedtoday that it has entered into an agreement with Global Network ExpertsCommunications Corporation (gnecom.com), a leading provider of global professional services for value-added IP network converged services. The partnership enables customers to use just one optical network to deliver all voice, data and video information.
Until recently, only large traditional carriers with overlay networks wereable to transmit voice as well as data and video on a local, national andglobal basis. Combining GNE's services with Stream's Metropolitan AreaNetworks, and high-speed gigabit ethernet technology means that convergedservices, both voice and data, can now be made available to any high volumeenterprise user.
"From GNE's perspective, Stream is in the best position to carry these newconverged services over its network," said Ron Chapman, president and CEO ofGNE. "Using the high performance of Stream's gigabit ethernet network, GNEprovides the ability to send multiple traffic types over a common medium, putting unprecedented convenience and capacity within the reach of any largebusiness, quickly, reliably, and cost-effectively."
In the past, there were two primary obstacles to using a single network totransmit several kinds of traffic at one time: available bandwidth andinformation prioritization. GNE's converged networking solution identifiesand queues the information packets that are transmitted across the network, ensuring that the most time-sensitive information - voice transmissions, for example - receive the highest priority.
"To create an analogy, this is like a highway that allows people who need tobe at work early pass everyone who can arrive later, so everyone arrives ontime," said Chapman. "Our Quality of Service mechanism ensures thatinformation identified as time sensitive, such as telephone conversations, precedes traffic that is not mission-critical."
In this way, a single network of sufficiently high capacity, such asStream's, can easily handle the entire diverse range of transmissionrequirements, including Voice over IP, streaming video, video conferencing, application traffic, and HTTP at a superior level of quality.
Since both applications and network are available now, service can beprovisioned on demand, interfacing easily with customers' existingtechnology.
"The advantages are clear because converging services accomplishes severalimportant customer goals," said Steve Spooner, president and CEO of Stream."It consolidates services maximizing the use of the network, so costs arelowered. It offers higher speeds and improved network utility withabsolutely no impairment to quality, so it's safe, fast and effective. AndGNE's leading-edge security engineering services ensure total security forinformation being transmitted across intranets, extranets and the Internet."
