Aug 29, 2001 : Microsoft Introduces 64-Bit Computing
📅 - Microsoft Corp. (microsoft.com) hasannounced the general availability of MicrosoftWindows Advanced Server, Limited Edition, Microsoft'sfirst server offering for the 64-bit computingenvironment based on Intel Corp.'s (intel.com) Itaniumprocessor. This new addition to the Windows serverplatform represents strong industry support forItanium-based computing and a commitment to providingcustomers with a reliable and scalableenterprise-class operating system based on WindowsAdvanced Server, LE, and the Itanium chipset.
Computer hardware manufacturers Compaq Computer Corp.,Dell Computer Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co. and IBM Corp.will begin shipping systems running Windows AdvancedServer in the next 30 days; Fujitsu, Hitachi Ltd.,Mitsubishi, NEC Corp. and Unisys Corp. will providesystems running Advanced Server later this year.
"The commercial availability of Windows forItanium-based systems represents a key milestone inIntel and Microsoft's long-standing collaboration andcommitment to delivering world-class hardware andsoftware for the next generation of enterprisecomputing," said Abhi Talwalkar, vice president andassistant general manager, Intel Enterprise PlatformsGroup. "Itanium-based servers combined withMicrosoft's latest server software offer customerssuperior performance, greater choice, reliability andinvestment protection at significantly lower coststhan proprietary solutions."
Software application developers-including ComputerAssociates International Inc., IBM, J.D. Edwards &Co., NetIQ, SAP AG, SAS and VERITAS-are migrating andbuilding more than 300 applications that exploit therobust functionality of the 64-bit Windows platform.
Scenarios for Itanium-based computing includeapplications that are memory- orcomputational-intensive, such as:
Web serving, including large-scale caching, Webhosting and secure communicationsBusiness intelligence, data warehousing anddatamartsComplex mechanical design and analysis, such asautomotive and aerospace engineeringScientific applications and research, such asastronomy, and human and earth sciences
