Aug, 2001 : Nortel Delivers Optical Ring for Brazil's Embratel
📅 - Nortel Networks (nortelnetworks.com)has delivered a 3,000-kilometer, 10gigabits-per-second optical ring to Embratel(embratel.com.br), enabling Brazil's leading long-distance carrier to provide scalable and flexible bandwidth for current and future customer demand.
This new optical ring is also expected to strengthenEmbratel's position as a leader in data, voice andInternet communications in Brazil. Nortel Networksdeployed, aligned and tested 37 repeater stations andterminals of the optical ring in less than threeweeks.
"The new system will provide our customers with accessto data services with unprecedented speed, rangingfrom 155 and 622 megabits per second to 2.5 gigabits,"said Ivan Campagnolli, vice president, networks forEmbratel, a WorldCom company. "This means thatEmbratel's customers will be able to transmit largevolumes of data, efficiently use data storage and CRMapplications, and quickly integrate numerous companyWeb sites."
Nortel Networks has deployed an integrated DWDM (densewavelength division multiplexing) and optical switchsolution for Embratel, including Nortel NetworksOPTera Long Haul 1600 Optical Line System and NortelNetworks OPTera Connect DX optical switch. NortelNetworks previously deployed a number of 10 GbpsSDH/DWDM systems for Embratel, linking the largestcities in Brazil - Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and BeloHorizonte.
Nortel Networks is a leading supplier of high-capacity10 Gbps solutions, which use DWDM technology to splitlight into as many as 160 channels to maximizecapacity on each fiber.
"This strengthens Nortel Networks optical leadershipposition in Brazil and attests to the strong workingrelationship between us," said Rafael Steinhauser, president, Nortel Networks do Brasil. "Nortel Networksleading-edge optical technology and its commitment tothe extremely aggressive deadline set by Embratel weredecisive factors in this deployment."
