Aug, 2001 : Intel Demonstrates Infiniband Architecture Solutions
📅 - Wide industry support and momentum behind the InfiniBand architecture and product development will be illustrated this week with four live demonstrations at Intel Developer Forum (developer.intel.com/idf), Fall 2001 in San Jose.
Intel Corporation also announced the addition of anInfiniBand test development kit for hardware vendorsand the Intel InfiniBand Software Optimization Lab,which is available to software vendors optimizingapplications for InfiniBand fabrics. Each of these newprograms will enable vendors to develop and tuneInfiniBand architecture-ready products.
The InfiniBand architecture is an I/O infrastructuretechnology that simplifies and speeds server-to-serverconnections and links to other server-related systemssuch as remote storage and networking devices.InfiniBand architecture's easier connectivity, reducedlatency, improved bandwidth and enhancedinteroperability features increase the performance andscalability of Intel architecture-based servers tomeet the growth needs of data centers, serviceproviders and server farms.
In Thursday's IDF Fall 2001 keynote by Gadi Singer, vice president and general manager of Intel'senterprise processors division, a demonstrationfeaturing Intel host components, IBM DB2, and SAP willshow a true three tiered application running onexisting IBM X-series hardware. Coupled with switchesfrom InfiniSwitch, QLogic and OmegaBand, thisdemonstration will illustrate how InfiniBandArchitecture and Intel-based platforms deliver ascale- out data center clustered solution.
First staged at Intel's Interoperability Lab, theworld's largest InfiniBand fabric to date featurestwenty-four vendors and more than 100 InfiniBanddevices. Shown at the IDF technology showcase, thedevices are connected in a distributed fabric andfeaturing video on demand, Web hosting, and a databasecluster running real enterprise workloads.
This InfiniBand architecture-enabled solution stack isbased on five standard Dell PowerEdge servers, eachwith Intel InfiniBand Host Channel adapters andsoftware, powered by two Intel Pentium IIIprocessors, 2 GB RAM and 100 GB disk space per server. The Linux-based IBM DB2 EEE clustered databasesupports SAP's BW product. Database performance andefficiency are expected to improve dramatically as aresult of the underlying InfiniBand fabric. TheInfiniBand architecture will enable industry standardclustered and distributed databases to providescalability and failover.
To accelerate industry development of softwareoptimized for InfiniBand fabrics, Intel also announcedthe opening of an InfiniBand software optimization labat Intel's Utah site. The lab will complement Intel'sexisting interoperability lab. The lab will allowsoftware vendors to optimize their applications onIntel InfiniBand enabled server platforms andsolutions.
Intel announced the delivery of test development kitsto aid in development of interoperable InfiniBandproducts. These are a supplement to the InfiniBandproduct development kits that Intel has been supplyingto the industry since February 2001. The kit includesInfiniBand test agents based on the InfiniBand TradeAssociation's test specifications and will assistdevelopers testing their products for compliance tothe InfiniBand architecture specifications. Kits willship immediately and will be included in the existingproduct development kit.
Intel is one of seven founding companies of theInfiniBand Trade Association (infinibandta.org),including Compaq, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM,Microsoft and Sun Microsystems, aiming to deliverproducts based on a new common I/O specification todeliver a channel-based, switched fabric technologythat the entire industry can adopt. To generate broad,industry-wide implementation of an InfiniBandinfrastructure, Intel and other key informationtechnology system suppliers are developing a varietyof building blocks to support servers, switches, software and connections between storage andnetworking devices within an InfiniBand fabric. Morethan 220 companies have joined the InfiniBand TradeAssociation since its launch in 1999.
