Oct, 2001 : Sun Takes on Microsoft with Aggressive Pricing Move


📅 - In a fierce move against Microsoft yesterday, Sun Microsystems announced today a migration program to encourage current Microsoft Internet Information Server customers to easily trade-up to iPlanet Web Server, Enterprise Edition 6.0 (iplanet.com/gosecure).

The trade-up includes detailed migration guides that help simplify thetransition to iPlanet Web Server, free Sun Chili!Soft ASP software thatallows customers to run Microsoft Active Server Pages code unchanged oniPlanet Web Server, and a 37 percent price reduction on iPlanet Web Serversoftware. This program represents a cost-effective alternative for companiesconcerned about frequent Microsoft IIS security warnings, including Code Redand Nimda, and want to move to a more secure alternative without disruptingtheir business.
"iPlanet takes product design issues very seriously, and security is a toppriority for all the products in the Sun Open Net Environment portfolio,"said Joe Keller, VP and general manager of application services at iPlanet."We've received overwhelming customer demand for a program that offerscompanies a quick, easy way to migrate to iPlanet Web Server so they canreduce their concern about the growing list of new securityvulnerabilities."
iPlanet Web Server, Enterprise Edition 6.0 is typically available for $1,495per CPU. Through the migration program, iPlanet Web server, EnterpriseEdition 6.0 software will be offered at $940 per CPU, a 37 percent pricereduction, through March 31, 2002, to customers using any Web server productother than iPlanet.
Sun Chili!Soft ASP for Windows Software, a server-side scripting and runtimeenvironment for the cross platform deployment of Active Server Pages Websites and Web applications, is available free to iPlanet Web Servercustomers.
This move comes after Sun's Friday announcement that the economic downturnand negative effects of the Sept. 11 attacks means the company'sfirst-quarter earnings would come in lower than expected and that it isslashing its workforce by 9 percent.
