Google Selects Equinix to Enhance Search Engine Performance

(google.com), announced yesterday that Google will leverage Equinix IBX centers to enhance the performance of its Internet services. As a part of the agreement, Google will establish a point of presence for its global search engine network in Equinix's Washington, D.C. area and Silicon Valley IBX centers.

Through this agreement, Google will be able to connect its global networkdirectly to a wide variety of Internet service providers, carriers and otherservice providers participating in Equinix's open marketplaces for Internetinfrastructure services. Direct interconnection to multiple leading networkproviders will enable Google to bring its content closer to end users andeliminate intermediate backbone transit, resulting in a faster and morereliable end user experience for Google users, while, at the same time,reducing Google's IP costs.
With 57 network service providers, Equinix IBX centers provide Google withdirect access to the widest possible choice of IP network services. As aresult of this network diversity and choice, Google can access the networksthat serve more than 85% of the world's Internet traffic via direct crossconnects. The Equinix solution enables Google to reduce costs for transitcircuits, enhance speed and reliability of service for end-users throughdirect interconnection, while receiving fast provisioning, and greatscalability through the wide selection of services and providers withinEquinix IBX centers.
"Google's traffic has grown significantly this year, and our networkcurrently powers 120 million Web searches daily," said Wayne Rosing,Google's vice president of engineering. "As the top pure search site on theWeb, Google must ensure the highest reliability and performance for ourusers. Equinix, provides us with enhanced performance, flexibility andscalability of our network operations."
In addition to establishing network POPs at Equinix, Google joins MSN andYahoo! in establishing content peering relationships with a variety ofnetworks via Equinix Exchange. Equinix Exchange allows large contentproviders to quickly and efficiently interconnect with a wide choice ofleading networks to increase performance and reduce costs.
