Dec 7, 2001 : Hacker Penetrates WorldCom Network
📅 - Global communications provider WorldCom (wcom.com) has become the latest victim of network intrusion specialist Adrian Lamo, according to a number of technology publications.
Earlier this week, numerous media outlets reported that Lamo, famous for previously exploiting security holes in the networks of Microsoft, Excite@Home and Yahoo, told the company last Friday of a hole he had found after penetrating the company's network four times in the past two months.
The hole left access open to the internal networks of a number of companies, including AOL Time Warner and Bank of America. WorldCom said Lamo worked with the company to fix the problem last weekend, and that there was no evidence that hackers had exploited the hole.
"We would rather know than not," WorldCom spokeswoman Jennifer Baker told reporters. "We are definitely appreciative, and we have secured our system."
Lamo said he penetrated WorldCom's network because he was in search of something to do. "It's definitely better than it would have been if someone wanted to attack Bank of America's sites and have it blamed on WorldCom," he told reporters.
In late August, Lamo made headlines for altering a news story posted on Yahoo! about Russian programmer Dmitry Sklyarov, who is accused of violating U.S. copyright law.
