Coca Cola and IBM Create Digital Archive System Robert B. Marks
📅 - IBM (ibm.com) and Coca-Cola (cocacola.com) announced yesterday that the computer giant would be helping Coca-Cola to create a powerful archival system. The new system will archive a century of corporate marketing and advertising icons, making them available to employees for future projects.
The Coca-Cola company's archive materials are organized into three libraries: images, documents, and advertising. While the first two libraries are relatively complete, the third is still in progress, and will eventually contain over 25,000 television commercials and corporate videos. Current materials, such as modern commercials, will automatically be digitized and included in the database.
"The Coca-Cola Company has a rich and extensive archive of imagery and documents that defines our company and our brand," said Philip F. Mooney, Coca-Cola's Director of Corporate Archives. "While preservation and retrieval of that material is important, we also wanted to create a robust system that would enable our employees in more than 200 countries to efficiently access our historical data and work collaboratively - all from their desktops."
The digital archives are built based on IBM's Content Manager, Lotus Notes, and Lotus Domino software. In order to build the archives, a team of IBM project managers, application developers, Web designers, and system integrators worked hand-in-hand with Coca-Cola.
"Coca-Cola has an outstanding vision for how to make the most of its priceless historical assets," said Dick Anderson, IBM's General Manager of Digital Solutions. "They are one of the first corporations to move its entire advertising and brand history to an online Digital Media environment. This type of advanced enterprise content management technology can enable corporations to re-purpose valuable assets, as well as improve efficiency, speed, continuity and collaboration in a way that gives them a competitive advantage.
"Coca-Cola is at the very early stage of an important new trend. The growth of e-business is increasing the need for companies to manage and distribute digital content, including images, computer-generated output, business documents, and rich media."
