Dec, 2001 : AT&T WorldNet Delivers E-Mail, Content by Phone

📅 December 11, 2001 - AT&T (att.com) announced today AT&T WorldNet Web Access by Phone, a new feature that brings Internet content and e-mail to virtually any telephone, powered by the caller's voice. Web Access by Phone enables AT&T WorldNet Service subscribers to call a toll-free number, sign in, and listen and reply to their e-mail messages, as well as get news, weather, stocks, sports and horoscopes.

AT&T launched the feature at the Internet World Show at the Jacob JavitsCenter today, and provided product demonstrations at the show's WorkplaceEvolution booth.
Web Access by Phone uses AT&T Labs' Natural Voices Text-to-Speech Engine, arealistic synthetic speech system. Additionally, the voice recognitiontechnology allows AT&T WorldNet Service subscribers to speak simplecommands, including "get my messages," "read," "delete" and "reply" tomanage e-mail messages from telephones.
"E-mail is an essential communications tool for consumers, and is treatedwith the same level of attentiveness once reserved for ringing telephones,"says Kevin Crull, senior vice president of AT&T's consumer unit. "With WebAccess by Phone, you don't need to log on to a computer to stay connected."
Three out of four e-mail users check their e-mail at home at least daily,and more than a third check e-mail at least a couple of times a day,according to company research.
AT&T WorldNet Web Access by Phone also allows users to access mailboxes theymay have with other Internet service providers. Additionally, AT&Tsubscribers can listen to their personalized content, making it possible tohear news from Reuters and Healthscout, check Weather.com for conditions,track their stocks through Thomson Financial and hear their daily horoscopefrom Astrology.com.
Available today, Web Access by Phone is free to AT&T WorldNet subscribersuntil March 1, 2002, as a special promotion. After the promotion, AT&TWorldNet subscribers will be charged $4.95 a month for the feature. Ademonstration of the feature can be found at download.att.net/WABP. Newsubscribers to AT&T WorldNet Service Plus or the AT&T WorldNet UnlimitedPlan who sign up by February 28 will receive one month of service free.
