IP-VPN Market Will Grow to $14.7 Billion in 2006, IDC Says

📅 December 18, 2001 - According to a recent study by IDC (idc.com), the totalIP-VPN services market for the United States will grow from over $5.4billion in 2001 to nearly $14.7 billion in 2006. This represents a CAGR of22% during the forecast period. IDC research also finds the carrier marketwill grow to over $5.3 billion in 2006, but the do-it-yourself marketremains the largest provider of IP-VPN services. This segment is expected togrow to nearly $9.4 billion in 2006.

Several factors in both 2000 and 2001 attributed to a forecast shift for2001. In particular, the general economic slowdown dampened IP-VPNdeployment in 2001, causing enterprises to slow their implementation plansfor IP-VPN services. This trend will continue into 2002 with resumeddramatic growth thereafter.
Demand for IP-VPN services is strong and growing. Some of the specifictrends in 2001 driving the IP-VPN market include more companies implementingand expanding IP-VPN services, carrier IP-VPN services continuing to expandand mature, and improvements in IP-VPN products and services.
Demand side data from IDC's 2001 WAN Manager Survey show significant changesover last year's results. IP-VPNs are maturing and have taken their place asa mainstream wide area network option for business. "Survey results showthat IP-VPNs are a much more common form of wide area network for manycompanies than in the past," said Steven Harris, research manager, IP-VPNservices. "The general trend seen this year is more intensive and extensiveuse of IP-VPNs for U.S. companies. More companies are using IP-VPNs and inmore sites and for more remote users than in 2000."
IDC's new study, "IP-VPN Services: U.S. Market Forecast and Analysis, 2001-2006" looks at the IP-VPN services market for the United States and outlinesthe specific trends that are impacting it. Topics covered include a forecastfor the IP-VPN services market, carrier market shares, carrier serviceprofiles, types of IP-VPN providers, and types of IP-VPN implementations.Remote access, site-to-site, and extranet IP-VPNs are discussed.Additionally, IDC has also released "IP-VPN Services: A Demand-Side View,2001."
