Motorola and Nortel to Create VoIP Solutions for Broadband Market

📅 February 4, 2002 - Motorola, Inc. Broadband Communications Sectorand Nortel Networks have agreed to create and deliveran integrated voice over IP solution for the broadband-cable market. Thisnon-exclusive agreement is intended to help simplify deployment of VoIPequipment by broadband network operators worldwide and spread the deliveryof new services to their subscribers.

The agreement brings together Motorola's IP cable access network experiencewith Nortel Networks expertise in deployment of large networks for deliveryof voice and data services. Together, the two companies intend to providebroadband network operators with an integrated VoIP solution that ispre-tested and in compliance with industry standards. The solution will alsoinclude coordinated sales and support, including network planning, design,and implementation.
"Given the early stage of deployment of VoIP equipment in the cableindustry, there are substantial benefits to cable operators from agreementssuch as the one between Nortel Networks and Motorola," said Tom Valovic,director, IP telephony, with IDC. "Integrated and interoperable solutionswill help speed the deployment of new networks that can support the bundleddelivery of voice, data and cable programming and thereby enable cableoperators to compete head to head with traditional service providers."
"By providing an integrated solution from back office to switch to accessnetwork, Motorola and Nortel Networks will be the first to deliver acomplete VoIP solution as a commercial product for broadband networkoperators," said Bruce Swail, vice president and general manager of MotorolaBroadband's telephony business. "As a result, operators will be able toprovide end-to-end VoIP performance and reliability while minimizingdeployment risks. At the same time, they will be poised to be among thefirst to take advantage of the opportunities surrounding emerging convergedservices."
Nortel Networks and Motorola are already working together to build a VoIPnetwork for ish, a Callahan Associates-owned company, offering voice anddata services to its subscribers.

The statement was in response to public speculation that the company might file for Chapter 11 following its fourth quarter earnings report. 📅 Feb 1, 2002 - Qwest Posts Major Losses - Voice and data services company Qwest Communications International Inc. posted on Tuesday a fourth-quarter loss on revenues, which were lower than expected. Citing an overall weak economy, sales and lowered sales for telephone services and high-speed fiber optic capacity, the company reported a net loss of $516 million, or 31 cents a share, compared with net losses of $116 million, or 7 cents a share, a year previous.
