Feb, 2002 : Yipes' Optical Networks Power Apex Radiology

📅 - Yipes Communications, Inc. (yipes.com), a provider ofscalable Ethernet services, announced yesterday that its gigabit opticalnetworks enable Apex Radiology (apexrad.com), a major private provider of outsourced tele-radiology services, to download more than 150,000 high-resolution medical images each month over the Internet.

Apex Radiology, based in Coral Springs, FL, has teams of licensedradiologists on staff around the clock to immediately interpret imagestransmitted by medical providers and hospitals in nearly 30 states. Itsservices can save lives by giving doctors in rural and suburban officesremote access to radiology experts at any time of the day or night. Apexalso helps major institutions in urban areas handle overflow work withoutsacrificing quality.
Apex Radiology needs plenty of bandwidth, since incoming images run as largeas 200 Megabytes. When it went shopping for a new service provider, it saysits key criteria were reliability, footprint and value. Apex chose Yipesover a dozen other major carriers, buying 12 Megabits per second ofbandwidth to the Internet.
"Yipes was the most cost-effective, robust network out there," said WadeRome, president of Apex Radiology. "I liked its IP orientation, reliablefiber-optic architecture and excellent coverage area for metro and nationalconnectivity. We felt its optical Ethernet service was far superior totraditional copper-based alternatives."
Yipes gives customers the ability to change bandwidth instantly to meetemergency needs, or simply to accommodate general business growth withoutnew truck rolls, equipment purchases or new line installations. Through asecure Web site, users can instantly select their bandwidth from 1 Mbps to1000 Mbps, in 1 Mbps increments.
In the past, the constraints of fixed telco networks forced Apex to turndown business, knowing that it couldn't add bandwidth in time to meetcustomer needs. "Yipes allows us to make business decisions based on theclient's merits without having to factor in the network," Rome said. "Wecould easily double our business over the next 12 to 18 months," he added.
Rome also said Yipes has proven to be reliable, with no downtime since Apexwas connected in August. "One time we disconnected our network from Yipes'port to move some equipment, and immediately we got a call from Yipes'customer care center asking if we had a problem," Rome recalled.
Yipes' services, available in 21 markets coast-to-coast, include Yipes MAN(Metro Area Networking), Yipes NAN (National Area Networking) and Yipes NET(high-speed Internet access).
