Mar, 2002 : Mirror Image Expands Content Delivery Service
📅 - Mirror Image Internet (mirror-image.com), a provider of distributed Web and content delivery services and subsidiary of Xcelera Inc. (xcelera.com), announced an expansion of its content delivery network solution set.
Designed to address the very specific needs demonstrated by customers of the company's content distribution, the new services include instaContent Download, instaContent Server and instaContent Guardian.
The ability to quickly adapt its services is a direct result of the architecture employed by Mirror Image, says Bob Hammond, senior vice president of the company's advanced technology group and general manager of Web Services.
Mirror Image's distribution architecture follows what Hammond calls an ?aggregate model,? employing a collection of miniature data centers called Content Access Points, rather than the more common ?edge model,? which spreads its infrastructure more thinly.
"What we had really done was develop a kind of an overlay platform that has software on it. And software, of course, can be modified and extended,? says Hammond. ?Now we can start to add value added services on top of that core platform. We're starting to take the feedback from our customers and offer not just a generic CDN offering, but very focused applications or very focused services to our core sets of customers."
The three new instaContent offerings are available, says Hammond, on an individual basis, allowing customers to shape their service. The instaContent Download service manages and distributes large objects such as software and updates, presentations and high-definition digital images. The instaContent Server combines globally replicated storage with bandwidth and capacity, handling millions of simultaneous Web requests. The instaContent Guardian provides controlled distribution, restricting and prioritizing access to content.
And along with the update, Mirror Image will allow its customers to individually tailor not just the service, but also the service levels. "You can actually pick which service you're interested in,? says Hammond, ?and in fact, you can actually pick the level of SLA as well. So if you're more interested in capacity, you can skew your service toward a capacity model, or if you prefer, you can skew it toward performance model. Or you can do both. It's much more flexible."
While the new service package is certainly a step forward for Mirror Image, the company has plans for even more innovative products. According to Hammond, Mirror Image is developing ideas regarding distributed transactions and the interaction of applications, exploring the Web Services platform.
This kind of exploration is made possible by the flexibility of the company's infrastructure, says Hammond. For Mirror Image, introducing new services doesn?t mean building new infrastructure. "It's just like a content site,? he says, ?so as we need additional services, we basically just slide them in as a module. We don't have to go out there and reinvent the architecture on the fly, which is very nice and it allows us to move pretty fast."
