Server Software Issues Pose Costly Risk to IT Operations: Report

📅 - Although server hardware and application software have evolved substantially, it has become more complex and costly to manage larger implementations of them, according to a new report.

The report, which was commissioned by PlateSpin (platespin.com), an IT management firm, says that while software applications designed for servers may have advanced, the approach to managing them has not, which can pose a problem to larger corporations. The report is based on the responses of more than 1,3000 IT professionals.
According to the report, larger organizations are forced to manage server-based software installed at multiple locations, which can often require an extensive amount of travel and on-site manual labor. The report also said that installation times for many common operating system and application combinations averages eight hours per server, which can be labor and capital intensive for companies. What's more, the report found that server software deployments and migrations were rated as the most time-consuming and expertise driven operations tasks by IT professionals.
"There is a very clear connection between operations costs and software management yet very little research that quantifies the core problems faced by IT departments managing server software," said Mark Verdun, President and CEO of PlateSpin "We believe this type of research will be valuable to all IT organizations, and that the findings will provide a solid baseline that IT organizations can use to benchmark their own IT operation against to highlight areas for improvement."
