Jun 8, 2007 : Netcraft Announces June Survey

📅 - Web analytics firm Netcraft (netcraft.com) announced on Wednesday that its June 2007 survey gained responses from 122,000,635 sites, an increase of 3.97 million sites from the May survey. This month the firm has expanded its graph of server software publishers to include Google, mainly because of Blogger's (blogger.com) move from Apache to GFE.

The change at Blogger, which occured last month, is primarily to blame for the further decline of 2.2 percent in Apache's headline market share, as well as most of the larger 7.4 percent decline in active sites. Google's services are quickly becoming a  popular alternative platform for operating a blog or simple Web site, or content that would have traditionally been hosted on a desktop or networked filesystem.

Google debuts with a 3.99 percent share of the server market in hostnames, and a 6.59 percent share in active sites. Most of those sites were previously running on Apache. This month's data revealed the power shift in Web hosting, with search portals and domain registrars experiencing huge growth while paid hosting specialists trail behind.

Microsoft and Google each gain more than half a million sites, with more than 532,000 and 521,000 sites, respectively. Go Daddy gained 455,000 while Demand Media 245,000 users on their own hosting platforms. This trend, along with the surge in social networks and image/video hosting services, is triggering deals in the hosting industry as providers seek the scale and breadth of services to compete.
