) said on Monday that it has introduced a new class of high-availability shared Web hosting to the marketplace, supported by an innovative approach to shared hosting architecture.
Following 2 years and $2 million of development, Interland says its patent-pending blueHALO shared hosting architecture stands poised to redefine the standards of shared Web hosting.
Matt Molen, director of product marketing for Interland's shared hosting, says the traditional many-accounts-to-a-single-server model for shared hosting is inherently flawed, as strains placed on the hardware by one customer account routinely have adverse effects on the performance of the sites that share that equipment.
blueHALO addresses that problem, says Molen, by storing customer data for shared hosting accounts on a network attached storage unit, and serving that data from an array of load-balanced Web servers. The redundant architecture allows shared Web hosting accounts to operate with no single point of failure.
?The shared hosting customer now has what a large enterprise would have had to pay hundreds if not thousands of dollars for,? says Molen.
In addition to the new architecture, he says, the blueHALO service includes several features designed to manage the performance of the shared hosting services. The Process Management feature sets thresholds for resource use by particular customers, ensuring that no one account consumes an unmanageable portion of resources. The Code Manager feature looks for common flaws in codes and scripts running on customer accounts, that can impact other users on a server.
According to blueHALO engineer Richard Coleman, the five-server cluster architecture currently being employed by Interland can host up to 30,000 customer accounts per cluster.
In addition to the performance improvements, says Coleman, the new architecture is no more expensive per customer and, due to economies of scale, is easier to manage than a traditional shared hosting infrastructure.
?We?re going to build on this,? says Molen, ?and establish ourselves as not only the biggest, but also the best shared Web hosting provider.?
Starting immediately, Interland is offering the blueHALO shared hosting service, on either Windows or Linux servers, starting at $19.95 a month. As an introductory promotion, the company is offering three free months with a 12-month contract.
