📅 June 13, 2007 - Independent IT research firm Tier1 Research (t1r.com) announced on Wednesday it has released a new report which reveals that the mass-market Web hosting is in a critical period of transformation.

The report provides analysis of significant changes in market share and analyzes important trends and developments that are driving the mass-market hosting sector in Q1 2007, as well as offers insight into where this market is going. For instance, shared Web hosting showed an increase in market consolidation while virtualized infrastructure threatens to revolutionize the delivery of hosting services.

The 45-page report, entitled 'A Review of the Mass-Market Hosting Sector ? M&A is the DNA of change, but transformation continues to take hold,' summarizes the key events of the quarter and evaluates their impact. The fourth report from the T1R Mass-Market Quarterly Series covers 20 key public and private companies in the mass-market hosting sector, including 1&1, 3Tera, Affinity Internet, Peer1 Network and Rackspace.

"Web service firms not normally thought of as hosters have now successfully entered the sector," says Philbert Shih, senior analyst at T1R and lead author of the report. "At the same time, the Internet giants continue to encroach on this sector as well. Ad-supporting hosting services remain young, but they are driving Google and Microsoft while also serving as an alternative revenue source for companies that take the necessary steps to reinvent the way they do business. All are important developments for a fragmented industry that is entering this critical period of transformation."

📅 Jun 14, 2007 - IBM Offers New Blade Servers - IBM (ibm.com) announced on Wednesday it is rolling out a new line of blade servers, BladeCenter S, which will eliminate smaller companies' needs to operate their own data centers and greatly reduce their computer systems' energy usage. IBM says the new technology line holds up to six blade servers at a time and is small enough to fit on a desktop, unlike other servers which often take up an entire air-conditioned room.
