Oct 10, 2002 : C&W Asks for Injunction against Akamai
📅 - Communications carrier Cable & Wireless (cw.com) announced this week that it has asked a US District Court to prevent its content delivery network competitor Akamai Technologies Inc. (,Akamai.com) from selling its EdgeSuite products and services, saying the product infringes on a key, patented technology that works to find alternative paths for information to travel.
If granted, says C&W, the preliminary injunction would prevent Akamai from marketing and selling products and services that infringe on Cable & Wireless's US Patent 6,275,470 covering the Host-to-Host Adaptive Routing Protocol (HHARP), the company's optimal-routing technology.
The request for an injunction is the latest in a patent-related legal battle between the companies that stretches back to 2001, in which each company has accused the other of infringing on its patents.
"Akamai should not be allowed to sell products and services that are based on our patent, and we are confident that Akamai will be found to be infringing," says Chris Albinson, chief strategy officer for Exodus, a Cable & Wireless Service, the organization formed by the integration of Digital Island with the Exodus business. "We continue to aggressively protect HHARP and our other intellectual property assets for the benefit of our customers."
