Nov 22, 2002 : Report Warns ISPs to Learn from 9/11

📅 - According to a new report from the National Research Council, while the Internet was not damaged significantly by the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, ISPs should be prepared for future emergencies.

The report says the attacks have forced businesses and government agencies to reevaluate how they structure computer networks, data backup centers and links to the Internet. In parts of lower Manhattan, telephone service was greatly affected on September 11, while mobile service suffered widespread congestion.
Because of the Internet's resilience, says the report, it was used as a tool in rescue and recovery services, with some individuals using instant messages from handheld devices and phones to communicate. Websites were also used to distribute information.
According to the report, the effects of the attack may shed light on the possible vulnerabilities of communications, including the Internet. Businesses and services should plan alternative communications strategies to use during emergencies.
