Jun, 2003 : Sex.Com Close to Resolving Domain Dispute
📅 - Sex.com said Thursday that it has taken a major step in its legal battle over the Sex.Com domain name after the U.S. Supreme Court denied the latest appeal made by Stephen Michael Cohen.
The legal battle over the Sex.Com domain name dates back to 1995 when Cohen sent a forged letter to VeriSign, formerly Network Solutions, Inc., requesting the transfer of the Sex.Com domain name from its owner, Gary Kremen. Cohen was ordered to pay a $65 million judgement for fraudently stealing the domain name and subsequently left the country. Since then, he has made repeated attempts at appealing the decision against him.
?The Supreme Court's denial of Mr. Cohen's writ petition is significant because it puts the final nail in the coffin,? said Pamela Urueta, attorney for Gary Kremen, Sex.Com CEO and founder. ?Mr. Cohen has tried unsuccessfully both in the Ninth Circuit and, most recently in the Supreme Court, to overturn the $65 million dollar judgment against him. There is nowhere else for him to try to appeal; the judgment is final.?
Sex.Com has also filed a lawsuit against VeriSign for unilaterally taking the domain name away from Kremen and is still awaiting a decision.
