LMi.net has a rich history dating back to its formation in January 1992 as a partnership between Gary Morrell and Dan Callaway. It was later officially incorporated in California in March 1993. Originally named "LanMinds, Inc.," the company was established to provide network installation services, particularly for local area networks (LANs) in the San Francisco Bay Area.Key milestones in LMi.net's journey:
Diversification of Services: While initially focused on network installation, the company expanded its services over the years. It began offering computer consulting services to network clients, as well as providing a range of computer hardware and software.
Entry into Internet Services: LMi.net started offering limited Internet services in 1994, beginning with UUCP mail routing for its clients. PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) dial-up services were later introduced, and the company began advertising its Internet services to the general public.
Strategic Partnership in Web Hosting: In November 1995, LMi.net entered into a strategic partnership with Hart Computers of Tokyo, Japan. This collaboration allowed LMi.net to offer web hosting services to Japanese businesses at competitive rates compared to local hosting providers. LMi.net was among the first U.S.-based ISPs to offer web hosting services in Japan.
Relocation and Expansion: In 1996, LMi.net moved its operations to its current location at 1700 Martin Luther King Jr. Way in Berkeley, California. The move to a larger space with improved telecommunication facilities facilitated the rapid growth of its Internet business.
