AMD to Buy World Labs for $8.2 Billion as AI Workloads Shift
📅 - AMD has agreed to acquire World Labs for about $8.2 billion in stock, bringing Fei-Fei Li's spatial AI research inside a chipmaker anticipating new computing demands. For cloud operators, the immediate change is strategic rather than contractual: Advanced Micro Devices gains access to emerging workloads, while buyers still lack deployment specifications, pricing, or capacity commitments.
World Labs works on models that generate and simulate three-dimensional environments from text, images, and video. Those workloads could eventually matter to customers building robotics systems, industrial simulations, or design tools. They may also ask different things of processors, memory, networking, [...][... Check source for end of article ...]
📅 - Digital Realty Plans Los Angeles Cable Landing Station for 2028 - Digital Realty plans to put a cable landing station inside its LAX12 data center in Los Angeles, bringing trans-Pacific capacity closer to carriers, platforms and colocation customers. Assured Communications will help design and build the facility, which is expected to support cables in 2028. The project could simplify interconnection, although no cable system or customer was named.
For a subsea cable operator, a landing station supplies more than a place to bring a system ashore. It needs power, space for equipment and onward connections that can carry traffic to customers. Digital Realty wants to put those functions within a campus where network providers and data center customers can [...]
📅 - Arelion Survey Finds Network Trust Gap Slowing Enterprise AI - Enterprise leaders say network provider concerns are affecting AI projects and cloud migrations, even as most report confidence in their carriers. In an Arelion survey, 58% said they had delayed, reduced or added safeguards to strategic initiatives over two years. Yet only 15% expressed complete confidence that their provider could detect and resolve a serious network failure.
The apparent contradiction is the story. Asked broadly whether they trust their current provider, 93% said they largely or completely do. Asked about a serious incident, their certainty falls sharply. That gap gives cloud and connectivity buyers a more useful question than whether a supplier is considered reliable: [...]
📅 - NVIDIA Debuts Platform to Secure AI Agents From Testing to Deployment - NVIDIA has introduced an agent security platform that lets operators place enforceable controls around software, including a watchdog designed to stop agents crossing boundaries. Its OpenShell runtime is available; the Sentry watchdog is a reference design tied to BlueField-4 processors. For cloud providers, the launch raises a question: who sets those boundaries and answers when they fail?
That question becomes harder when an agent can use tools, retrieve data and keep working after a user has stepped away. A model may have instructions about what it should do, but a hosting platform needs a way to restrict what the running process can actually reach. NVIDIA's Open Agent Safety Platform [...]
📅 - Helix Gains $1 Billion From Samsung for AI Data Center Plans - Samsung Electronics and five affiliates have committed $1 billion to Helix Digital Infrastructure, adding capital and potential equipment and construction links to an AI data center platform. The money lifts Helix Digital Infrastructure's funding base above $11 billion. For hyperscale buyers, the issue is whether those partners can deliver power, cooling, buildings, and connectivity on schedule.
Helix Digital Infrastructure was launched in June with backing from KKR, Kuwait Investment Authority, NVIDIA, and Vistra. Its plan is unusually broad: develop data centers while arranging the power and network infrastructure those sites require. Samsung's arrival makes that plan more substantial. [...]
📅 - Belgian €1 Billion Data Center Plan Tests Existing Grid Access - Switch Datacenters from the Netherlands is exploring a wholesale data center on the former Sappi paper mill site in Lanaken, Belgium, where existing high-voltage infrastructure could give the project an advantage in securing power. The proposal tests a larger question for European operators: can retired industrial sites become usable cloud capacity without lengthy grid work? The electrical entitlement remains undisclosed.
The proposed facility would occupy roughly eight hectares of a larger industrial property. Switch Datacenters would provide the buildings and supporting infrastructure, while wholesale customers would install their own servers. Its potential investment has been described [...]
📅 - Eaton Pays €810M for COL Group’s Data Center Power Gear - Eaton has agreed to buy Italy's COL Group for €810 million, adding medium-voltage switchgear and European manufacturing capacity to its data center power business. The deal addresses a less visible constraint on new facilities: electricity must be distributed safely after it reaches the site. Eaton has disclosed no increase in output or shorter delivery times for customers.
A grid connection does not make a data center ready for servers. Operators also need equipment that controls and distributes electricity through the facility, often across construction phases that cannot all wait for the final campus to be finished. COL Group makes medium-voltage distribution systems, grid automation [...]
