Jul, 2016 : European Commission Okays EU-US Privacy Shield

📅 July 13, 2016 - The European Commission approved the agreement between the European Union and the U.S. for a privacy shield that will protect data transfers between the two on Tuesday. The Commission Implementing Decision (PDF) was announced after months of negotiations between the parties. It will extend data privacy protection measures for data that is transferred and held in the U.S.

“The EU-U.S. Privacy Shield is a robust new system to protect the personal data of Europeans and ensure legal certainty for businesses. It brings stronger data protection standards that are better enforced, safeguards on government access, and easier redress for individuals in case of complaints. The new framework will restore the trust of consumers when their data is transferred across the Atlantic. We have worked together with the European data protection authorities, the European Parliament, the Member States and our U.S. counterparts to put in place an arrangement with the highest standards to protect Europeans' personal data.” – Věra Jourová, Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality

The companies will use the new offering to target corporate customers and will offer many additional services through the IBM cloud platform.

PTCL is headquartered in Islamabad, Pakistan and has been known as the largest converged services carrier in the country. They offer many services including video-conferencing, internet access and more. The two companies together will be able to offer a turnkey solution developed by IBM and available through the PTCL data centers in Karachi and Lahore.

The Senator posted an open letter to John Hanke, Niantic's CEO, to point out the concerns about privacy for the more than 7.5 million users who have already downloaded the app. In the letter, he stated he is “concerned about the extent to which Niantic may be unnecessarily collecting, using, and sharing a wide range of users' personal information without their appropriate consent.”
