) to power the US federal government's official web portal, USA.gov (usa.gov), with its Enterprise Cloud platform.

According to Terremark's Monday announcement, its Enterprise Cloud will let the GSA dynamically provision cloud computing resources, helping it handle online traffic spikes. Reliability and agility is fundamental to the federal government's web portal, which serves as a gateway to information from US local, state and federal government agencies.

"GSA's choice of The Enterprise Cloud to host USA.gov proves the reliability and compelling value proposition our cloud computing platform offers to Federal government agencies," Terremark federal group president and chief executive officer Jamie Dos Santos said in a statement. "As organizations search for the most agile and cost-effective solutions to their IT infrastructure needs, The Enterprise Cloud provides a scalable and dynamic platform designed to meet their real-time needs."

Launched in June 2008, Terremark's Enterprise Cloud is a managed computing platform that gives customers the ability to provision, configure, deploy and manage computing resources for mission-critical applications in minutes, giving them control of a flexible resource pool with a web-based console for deploying server capacity on demand.

Other organizations that use Terremark's Enterprise Cloud services include Preferred Hotel Group (preferredhotelgroup.com), which began using it in August 2008 to meet the disaster recovery needs of its mission-critical applications including its online reservation system.

Enterprise Cloud includes a Dynamic Capacity Management function in its web interface that can be enabled for processing and memory resources as required, provides real-time access to additional computing capacity, allowing clients to address transient spikes in usage in a flexible and cost-effective manner.

"We are excited about the continued success of our Federal business and the significant opportunities we expect in the coming quarters," Terremark chairman and CEO Manuel D. Medina said in a statement. "We believe our experience providing enterprise-class cloud computing services to the commercial market, and our vast experience working with government customers, ideally positions us to benefit as more and more federal government agencies adopt cloud computing solutions to meet their IT needs."
