📅 - With a reputation as a major automation tool for UNIX and Linux-based machines, software developer Cfengine (cfengine.com) has announced version three of its flagship, open-source, self-repairing data center management software, cfengine, including substantial rewriting of the software that has kept thousands of computers compliant and secure over the past 15 years.
Based on its "Promise Theory" technology, according to Cfengine's January 1 announcement, the company is working to simplify computer infrastructure for the next decade, with features added to its free edition and the upcoming enterprise edition to be released later in 2009. Both versions feature a brand new language with a simple, uniform syntax and powerful templating, and integrated, self-diagnostics and automated self-healing documentation.
Cfengine 3 integrates sophisticated knowledge management using topic mapping, a method to make merge-able electronic indices, which has been a certification standard for several years since its invention in the early 90's.
The new version, which is fully integrated with the existing cfengine 2 systems, includes other features such as generic file editing with multiple models; pattern matching and design features for matching different environments; GPL 3 code; and auto-encapsulation of cfengine 2 for incremental upgrade.
Cfengine offers support for its free version from its cfengine AS division and plans to make its enterprise edition available in 2009 with extended features.
