Jan 5, 2009 : Pakistan, India Engage in Cyber War
📅 - Many government-operated websites in India and Pakistan have been hacked and defaced following November's Mumbai terrorist attacks, as reported on Friday by The National.
The Indian group Guards of Hindustan hacked into the Oil and Gas Regularity Authority of Pakistan website and placed their organization's logo and the Indian national symbol on the site.
The Pakistani organization Pakistan Cyber Army soon answered the attack by hacking the websites of the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, the Centre for Transportation Research and Management, the Kendriya Vidyalaya of Ratlam and the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation of India.
With the exception of the ONGC website, all the sites are still down.
Last month, a Pakistani group calling itself Zombie_KSA hacked and defaced the Criminal Investigation Department website, a cyber security unit of the Andhra Pradesh state police, and removed the site's information about 10 most wanted criminals.
The CID website was not restored until later that evening.
The group also posted insulting messages on the site which read, "You guys hacked Paki OGRA Web site. Don't hack small Paki sites."
The attacks continued to worsen as Pakastani hackers hit several other prominent Indian websites.
Last week, Pakistani group Mianwalian of Whackerz defaced the Eastern Railways website, which took the website's authorities two and a half hours to restore.
Soon after the Eastern railways attack, another Pakastani group, which is yet to be identified, hacked an Indian television station and State Bank of India.
The website of Bank of India, one of the largest banks in India, was completely down on Christmas Eve.
In other news involving politically motivated cyber attacks, many prominent Israeli websites have been defaced by online militants, including Ynetnews.com, the website of a pro-Zionist Israeli daily newspaper.
