Nov 26, 2008 : Sun Aids China Disaster Recover Plans
📅 - Sun Microsystems (sun.com) announced last Tuesday that it has donated its Sun Modular Datacenter to the China National Disaster Reduction Center in an effort to help the Chinese government build a satellite disaster reduction application system.
One of the first IT services companies to come out with a containerized data center with its Project Blackbox in 2006, Sun MD integrates computing, storage and networking in a 20 foot shipping container with cooling capacity, monitoring and a power splitting system which is easy to deploy and widely applicable in an outdoor setting such as disaster-stricken areas.

Since its introduction, the Sun MD has been applied in multiple fields, including manufacturing, education, health care, scientific research and telecommunications.
According to Sun's most recent announcement, the CNDRC, under the direction of the China Ministry of Civil Affairs, will be working to improve national comprehensive disaster reduction work through its collection and analysis of disaster information, on-site support, disaster analysis and scientific research. The Sun MD will be used for back-up storage and management of data and applications including environment and disaster monitoring and forecasting.
As the data acquired through satellite remote sensing increases, the CNDRC says it will be constructing a small satellite application system that will provide hundreds of Gigabytes of data each day.
The CNDRC also plans to deploy the mobile data center to manage severe disasters and provide platform support for strategic decisions at the disaster control command center.
"Sun's donation of the revolutionary Sun Modular Datacenter demonstrates its deep concern for the welfare of the Chinese people, especially those affected in the aftermath of the Sichuan earthquake this past May," says Dou Yu Pei, Vice Minister, China Ministry of Civil Affairs. "China has placed great emphasis on disaster reduction and control because it directly affects the well-being of our citizens. As a prominent company, Sun realizes its commitment to social responsibility. We are grateful for their generous support."
Sun's commitment to social responsibility in the country has been evident since 1987 when it contributed to the building of several Hope schools in Sichuan and other provinces and improved the study environment for almost 3000 students. And in May, Sun employees raised more than $140,000 for the victims of the Sichuan earthquake.
Since Sun's entrance into the mobile data center market, many competing companies have launched their own containerized data center offerings as well including Dell, Rackable and most recently, HP.
