May, 2001 : Intel to Hire Outside US Despite Job Cuts

📅 - Microchip manufacturing giant Intel Corp. (intel.com) said on Wednesday that it would continue to hire employees at its operations outside the United States, despite announcing cutbacks of 5,000 jobs earlier this year in response to the slowing economy.

The company says the hiring and investment will help the leader in computer chips develop technologies and applications for its products that would provide a strong potential for business when the economy picks up.
Intel says its head count is shrinking in the US, but increasing globally. Although the company is cutting its staff from 89,000 to 84,000, it is increasing its numbers internationally, including at its Indian research and development facility.
In March, the company announced plans to cut 5,000 jobs and predicted a first quarter drop in revenue of about 25 percent below the level of the previous quarter, as the US economy hurt the demand for personal computers and spread into networking, communications and servers.
The results reported by the company in April, though, were slightly better than expected, despite drops in net income and first quarter sales. Intel was positive about business, and reiterated its plans to spend $7.5 billion this year on capital spending and $4.2 billion on research and development.
The company says it plans to increase the staff at its Indian research and development center from 400 professionals to 500 by the end of this year. The center, located in the southern tech capital city of Bangalore, was launched two years ago with 20 employees.
Intel says it plans to innovate its way out of the slowdown, rather than save its way out.
