Jun 8, 2001 : WorldCom Sets Up Vancouver Data Center

📅 - Data and communications company WorldCom Inc. (worldcom.com) says it has chosen to set up a new Canadian data center in Vancouver, BC because the city has jumped past Ottawa and Calgary to become the country's third-biggest e-business hub.

The data center in downtown Vancouver will be the second-largest of three new data sites the company is building, part of a $25 million Canadian investment by the US-based WorldCom, which generates $40 billion annually in revenue.
The data centers are designed to handle WorldCom's Web hosting business as well as handling colocation duties for the company's clients? Internet servers. WorldCom says the $6 million facility in Vancouver will be operational by Labour Day. And while the facility will serve Western Canada in general, its focus will be primarily British Columbia.
WorldCom says that it feels in the last 18 months Vancouver has moved from the fifth-largest e-commerce center in Canada to the third, behind Toronto and Montreal, and moving ahead of Ottawa and Calgary. While the BC economy has lagged behind the rest of the country, says WorldCom, e-business has flourished in the province.
Although WorldCom plans to set up other data centers in key Canadian cities, including Ottawa and Calgary, the company decided to begin in western Canada after analyzing growth potential last year. The company says it is making a $6 million bet on the fact that there is more opportunity in Vancouver.
