Exodus and Ejasent Deliver Utility For Solaris-Based Application Processing

📅 - Managed Web hosting company Exodus Communications, Inc. (exodus.com), and Ejasent, Inc., a provider of infrastructure software and services, today announced an agreement to deliver Ejasent's UpScale suite to Exodus customers. UpScale enables on-demand processing of Solaris-based applications on a pay-per-use basis. Delivered as part of Exodus' managed service offerings, the UpScale service helps reduce the complex infrastructure required to support scalable, business-critical Web-based applications.

Drawing on the capabilities of Ejasent's Application Processing Network (APN), the UpScale service creates a Virtual Single Server (VSS) that is deployed globally and adaptively expands or contracts in real time to changing traffic load conditions. Typically, enterprises overbuild their processing infrastructure to handle peak traffic, but the VSS enables companies to tap into the processing power of hundreds of networked servers, and have access to a globally distributed system with massive scalability on an as-needed basis. This has enabled customers as diverse as an infrastructure services provider, an online financial services company, an airline and a telecommunications company, among others, to realize up to a 56% cost saving on their computing infrastructure. The ability to offload processing from centralized servers and to schedule applications to run on-demand allows companies to significantly improve overall Web site performance while dramatically reducing infrastructure costs.
"One clear trend in the infrastructure services industry today is toward computing utility or 'services on demand' technologies that allow customers to minimize infrastructure expenditures while achieving the highest quality of services. The Exodus/Ejasent offering will likely be very attractive to companies of all sizes that need to maximize the value of the services they purchase while containing costs," said David Tapper, senior research analyst, IDC.
"Given the unpredictability of peak loads and Web demands, our enterprise customers require sophisticated services that adapt dynamically to Web conditions," said Ellen M. Hancock, chairman and CEO of Exodus. "This utility-based service offering enables companies to instantly scale Solaris OE-based applications on the APN and to derive a more cost effective IT infrastructure without over provisioning, and gain enhanced Web site performance."
``The Exodus/Ejasent relationship will fundamentally transform computing economics. Consuming computing resources based on the utility model enables net-centric enterprises to offer an enhanced user experience while controlling costs,'' said Tim Unger, CEO and president of Ejasent. ``Together, Exodus and Ejasent offer the optimal platform for massively scalable, globally distributed computing providing customers the ability to rapidly enter new markets while controlling risk.''
Ejasent's UpScale service is currently available in Exodus IDCs and pricing will be based on a utility model.
