Jun, 2001 : Sun and Veritas to Provide Data Protection
📅 - Computer hardware and software manufacturer Sun Microsystems (sun.com) and VERITAS Software Corporation (veritas.com), The Data Availability Company, announced on Wednesday that they have created a fully integrated backup and recovery solution designed to deliver the low entry-level price and compact footprint required by small businesses and workgroups.
As one of the first affordable systems of its kind, the solution opens up the benefit of backup and automated data recovery to the low-end market. The solution combines either the Sun StorEdge L20 tape library or the Sun StorEdge L9 tape autoloader with VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer.
?Small organizations have data protection needs that can be every bit as demanding as larger organizations. IT professionals in small organizations are challenged by a chronic lack of time and financial resources, and must do more with less,? said Fred Broussard, analyst, IDC. ?Such customers demand integrated data protection solutions, from single and multiple vendors, that work out of the box. Sun and VERITAS have used their strong relationship to develop an integrated software and tape backup solution at an affordable price point to meet the demands of this market segment.?
Sun is now directly offering VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer, available as a standalone solution, or packaged with either the Sun StorEdge L20 tape library or the Sun StorEdge L9 tape autoloader. The Sun StorEdge L20 and NetBackup BusinesServer package offers 2 DLT8000 tape drives, 20 cartridges and is an ideal solution for customers doing less than 40 GB of backup daily and maintaining a 15-day rotation. The Sun StorEdge L9 and NetBackup BusinesServer package includes a DLT8000 tape drive with nine cartridges into a small footprint desktop or optional rackmount autoloader, delivering fast, simple and unattended backups with more than 360 gigabytes of native storage capacity.
?Our close working relationship with Sun enables us to deliver pre-tested and proven integrated solutions to the market,? said Neal Ater, senior vice president, VERITAS, data protection group. ?Providing a scalable data protection solution for Sun StorEdge L20 and L9 tape drive products demonstrates our commitment to supporting Sun products and extends investment protection to our mutual customers.?
