Jul, 2001 : Telus Speeds up ADSL Roll-out in Alberta and B.C.

📅 - Telus (telus.com), one of Canada's leading telecommunications companies, yesterday announced that its original target completion date of 2005 for expansion of high-speed ADSL service will be reached two years ahead of schedule.

Due to higher than expected customer demand and the company's ability tomeet this demand, Telus Velocity ADSL high-speed Internet service will beavailable to over 95% of homes and workplaces in 38 specific communities bythe end of 2003. More than 70 per cent of the population of Alberta andB.C. will have access to the service.
"This aggressive high-speed Internet roll-out plan is a cornerstone ofTelus' Internet, data and wireless-focused strategy," said Dan Delaloye, executive vice-president and president, Telus consumer solutions. "Telus isnow on track to meet our original five-year targets in three years. Telushas acted swiftly by investing $200 million this year, or 40 per cent of our$500 million ADSL expansion budget, which combined with more extensivemarketing, has received tremendous response in the marketplace, which bodeswell for take-up of the service."
Delaloye added that, while it is easier to meet demand in larger urbanareas, Telus will continue with plans to connect Velocity ADSL service tosmaller communities like Taber, Alberta and Campbell River, B.C., where bothbusiness and residential customers greatly benefit from high-speed Internetservice.
"This effort to meet demand in smaller rural communities should be furtherenhanced by our ability to provide high-speed services over the governmentof Alberta's SuperNet network," said Delaloye. "In those rural and remoteareas of Alberta where it is not economically feasible for Telus to extendVelocity ADSL, Telus will examine the possibility of utilizing theGovernment of Alberta's SuperNet network."
