RISQ, Cisco Create Canada's First 10Gbps Research and Education Network

📅 - Reseau d'informations scientifiques du Quebec or RISQ (risq.qc.ca), Quebec's educational telecommunications infrastructure and serviceprovider, yesterday announced it has chosennext-generation Internet routers from Cisco SystemsInc. (cisco.com), a leader in Internet networking, to build out the core of its educational network.

RISQ will deploy Cisco 12410 Internet Routers on itsIP backbone, creating the first Multiprotocol LabelSwitching virtual private network (MPLS VPN) in aCanadian educational & research network able to scaleto 10Gbps OC-192 speeds. The Cisco next-generationInternet router architecture will allow the RISQnetwork to deliver high bandwidth, high-value servicessuch as multiple streams of voice, data and videowhile minimizing network operation costs.
RISQ chose the Cisco 12400 Internet Router, part ofthe Cisco family of next generation Internet routers, for the ability to offer 10G bps performance, MPLS IPVirtual Private Networks, and IP Quality of Service. The Cisco 12400 Internet Router allows RISQ to scaleits network to 10G bps core speeds and to provide thebandwidth necessary for next-generation IP services, including video conferencing and Voice over IP.
"It is critical our members have access to anadaptable network that provides very high bandwidthand IP QoS", said Pierre Bouchard, president and CEOof RISQ. "Cisco is the only equipment provider able toprovide a top-of-the-line, cost-effective networkarchitecture that delivers all of the features we werelooking for. We can now deliver a state-of-the-art infrastructure that will meet the needs of our membersnow and into the future."
The company says the Cisco 12400 enables RISQ toensure member users that they are receiving the bestIP QoS in the industry. Only Cisco offers guaranteedpriority packet delivery, packet prioritization, thelowest latency, and packet sequence integrityavailable in the industry, all critical capabilitiesfor enabling high growth, profitable real-time IPservices like VoIP and video. RISQ also benefits fromthe Cisco 12400 Internet Router's superior investmentprotection, which means that RISQ can deploy allexisting Cisco 12000 Internet Router line cards in thenew platform.
In addition to deploying Cisco 12410 Internet Routersin its core network, RISQ is installing Cisco Catalyst6506 and 3508G-L3 switches in the distribution levelof the network as well as Cisco Catalyst 4908Gswitches and 7140 and 7401 routers on the edge.
"Both RISQ and Cisco have strong histories of networkexpertise and innovation," said Lui Fogolini, Canadianservice provider operations director for Cisco. "We'repleased to be supporting RISQ in its mission to supplythe educational and research institutes of Quebec withthe superior service provider network infrastructuresthey need to carry out their mission. The 12400routers will enable RISQ to guarantee high prioritypacket delivery, which is critical to meet theincreasing need for premium IP services. The addedcapacity, performance and scalability obtained fromthe Cisco products will further enable RISQ tomaximize the value of their members' networks."
RISQ's fiber-optic backbone is part of CA*net 3, thethird generation network for research and education, provided by CANARIE Inc., Canada's advanced Internetdevelopment organization.
