Sep, 2001 : Broadcom Introduces Two-Line Cable Modem Chip

📅 September 14, 2001 - Broadcom Corporation (broadcom.com -> hostinger.com), a leading provider ofintegrated circuits enabling broadband communications, yesterday introducedthe Broadcom BCM3351, a highly integrated, lowpower, two-line, Voice overInternet Protocol cable modem chip.

The new single-chip modem is Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification(DOCSIS)/EuroDOCSIS 1.0/1.1 and CableHome-capable and is available withBroadcom's PacketCable VoIP software.
The company says BCM3351 provides cable operators with a low-cost, highlyintegrated cable broadband gateway solution that can simultaneously delivervoice, video, data and home networking services. The combination of featuresincorporated into the chip enables a wide range of interactive IP-basedservices, from multiline digital IP cable telephony to secure high-speednetworked multimedia broadband services in the home and business.
The chip is designed for primary-line and second-line cable telephonyproducts, providing two lines of VoIP/Fax over Internet Protocol, 32 megabitper second multimedia home phone line networking, plus extensions for IEEE802.11 and Bluetooth wireless networking.
BCM3351-based VoIP broadband gateway cable modems will enable cableoperators to offer enhanced services that include:

The BCM3351 integrates all the silicon functions required for a two-lineVoIP broadband gateway cable modem, and is the first single-chip, two-lineVoIP cable modem to include a digital signal processor module for deliveryof compressed voice packets.
Included with the BCM3351 is Broadcom's PacketCable software, CablexChange,a suite of the PacketCable-specified VoIP software that includes the NetworkCall Signaling protocol stack plus the latest media, signaling andauthentication security software.
To enable customers to quickly develop BCM3351-based VoIP broadbandgateways, Broadcom is now shipping a fully functional, cost-effective,two-line VoIP cable modem reference design, the BCM93351VCM. It is acomplete DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS VoIP capable cable modem with Broadcom'sCablexChange and Propane software, plus direct connections for 10/100Ethernet, USB 1.1 and 32Mbps HPNA 2.0.
The Broadcom HPNA 2.0 solution provides a 32 Mbps multimedia Ethernet-likenetwork over existing phone wires, eliminating the need for Ethernet wiring.The BCM93351VCM comprises a complete development package, includingschematics, Gerber files, bill of materials, software source code anddedicated applications and engineering support.
