Nov, 2001 : PipingHot Begins Broadband Trials with Orange UK

📅 - Piping Hot Networks (pipinghotnetworks.com) and Orange UK (orange.co.uk) are conducting trials of high speed Internet access and video streaming services using new Broadband Fixed Wireless Access (BFWA) technology.

The two-month trial employs a single base station providing BFWA links toten subscribers. The initiative is the world's first Broadband WirelessInternet Forum compliant customer trial using PipingHot Networks BroadbandFixed Wireless Access Radio Frequency units operating at 3.4GHz.
In the early phase of the trial, data rates of up to 2Mbps per subscriberhave been measured. These rates compare favourably with regular dial-upmodem speeds of up to 56kbps, or 128kbps with ISDN.
The objective of the trial is to allow Orange UK to evaluate the BFWAtechnology and to validate its business plan assumptions on servicessupported and bandwidth delivered. The BFWA solution for Orange UK, usingequipment built to BWIF standards and specifications, has proveninteroperability between equipment supplied by BWIF members.
The BWIF standards were established to encourage a selection of vendors todevelop compatible equipment supporting a variety of service applications. The aim is to drive unit volumes, thus lowering prices and bringing theflexibility of BFWA deployment to a wider market.
Nigel King, technical director of PHN said: "With the technology alreadyhaving performed to expectations in our recent trials with the educationsector, these trials are enabling PHN to validate the technology in a liveenvironment, whilst allowing Orange UK to evaluate the system and test itsinvolvement in this growing sector."
As well as undertaking trials of its market-ready systems, PipingHotNetworks is continuing to develop equipment to meet the requirements of agrowing industry. The company is currently in advanced development of alow-cost integrated Customer Premises Equipment unit, which the company sayswill have mass-market appeal owing to its cost, ease of installation, andits scalable functionality.
