Feb 26, 2002 : EU Urges Adoption of IPv6
📅 - The European Union (europa.eu.int) has asked thatgovernments and industry work together to accelerate the introduction ofInternet Protocol version 6, or IPv6, reported vnunet.com.
EU Commissioner Erkki Liikanen insisited in its latest communication, "IPv6:Priorities for Action," that IPv6, a protocol that will create more Internetaddresses, is necessary to cope with the sharp rise in mobile andWeb-enabled devices. Currently, the Web is based on an older version of IP(IPv4) which has a finite number of addresses for users to connect to, andis set to run out in three or four years, according to Liikanen.
"IPv6 is a critical technology for enabling the convergence of the Internetwith mobile communications, an area where Europe leads the world," he said.
EU officials have at the same time unanimously approved Spain's plan toincrease Internet use and help Europe catch up with the US.
An EU summit will be held in Barcelona on March 15 to provide a politicalboost towards developing the Web in European member nations. The agenda willinclude plans to promote the development of bandwidth and content, includingonline provision of administrative, health and education services.
