Mar, 2002 : MSNBC Olympic Websites Upheld 99.98% Availability

📅 March 8, 2002 - The official combined websites for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, nbcolympics.com and olympics.com, maintained 99.98% availability(internally measured by MSNBC, producer of the official combined site) andhave become one of the largest event websites in sports history with arecord 9 million unique users logging on each week during the Games, MSNBCannounced yesterday.

The Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and NBC partnered with MSNBC and MSN to produce, host anddistribute the official website for the Olympic Winter Games of 2002. As thefirst Olympic website built on Microsoft technology, the site attracted oneof the largest online audiences in history for a sports event.
"Site stability was our number one priority and we were prepared to handlemost anything," said Ona Karasa, executive VP and general manager forMSNBC.com. "We were confident in developing the site on Microsofttechnology, which allowed us to rapidly leverage existing infrastructureresources."
Fueled by dramatic and controversial moments throughout the Games, such asthe pairs figure skating, short track speed skating, ladies figure skatingfinals and the gripping ice hockey finish, the sites served a total of 350million page views in the month of February. "Live Now" was a popularfeature on both sites, providing users with detailed results of competitionswhile in progress. A total of 113 million pages of live results were servedup throughout the duration of the Games.
"We took the necessary precautions to ensure near 100% availability," saidMike Corrigan, director of technology for MSNBC.com. "We succeeded atcreating a secure, high performance environment that could survive externalattacks, while still maintaining high availability."
This official Olympic site was built with the latest Microsoft technologiesincluding Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server, Windows 2000 AdvancedServer, Internet Information Services, and SQL Server 2000 EnterpriseEdition.
MSNBC and MSN were the official online content providers for the 2002Olympic Winter Games and offered consumers exclusive access to news,results, headlines and information.
