May, 2002 : Sun Introduces New Network Appliance for Web Hosts, SMEs

📅 May 13, 2002 - Network hardware and software firm Sun Microsystems today unveiled the Sun Cobalt RaQ 550 server, a new rack-mountable appliance designed to expand the company's network edge offerings while bringing turnkey services to small and medium enterprises.

The server, which starts at $1699 (US), is pre-configured with the hardware and software requirements necessary for companies to deploy e-mail, Web hosting and other Internet services without prior server experience.
"Customers want a no-hassle solution for delivering content and network applications," said Vivek Mehra, Vice President and General Manager of Sun Cobalt. "The RaQ 550 is the perfect server appliance for network infrastructure applications because it's easy to implement, highly affordable and simple to manage. The RaQ 550 is built to help companies reduce administration costs and get a fast return on investment."
Sun said the RaQ 550 is the company's sixth-generation server. The new appliance is equipped with a 1.26 GHz processor, up to 2 GB of memory and two 80 GB drives with support for RAID 0 and 1.Additional features also include the 2.4 Linux kernel update, enhanced security and system monitoring features, and a new design for "greater access and reliability," the company said.

📅 May 14, 2002 - Standard & Poor's Remove WorldCom from S&P 500 - Standard & Poor's (standardandpoors.com) said late yesterday it had removed telecommunications firm WorldCom from its S&P 500 index. The global financial research and analysis firm said it was removing WorldCom due to a "lack of representation," a release from Standard & Poor's read. "Company additions to and deletions from an S&P equity index do not in any way reflect an opinion on the investment merits of the company."
