May, 2002 : IBM Provides IT Infrastructure for Colgate-Palmolive

📅 - Technology giant IBM (IBM.com) announced on Friday that it has been selected by consumer products company Colgate-Palmolive as its strategic provider of infrastructure technology, including servers, storage, software, PCs and other products.

IBM will supply infrastructure to power Colgate-Palmolive's critical business operations, beginning with its SAP applications. Colgate-Palmolive has already begun phasing in IBM eServer pSeries UNIX servers, IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Servers and Tivoli enterprise management software. IBM says Colgate-Palmolive estimates that the solutions have already resulted in a 40 percent boost in performance and substantial improvements in reliability.
"As one of the world's best-known consumer product companies, Colgate-Palmolive understands the significant impact that IT infrastructure has on business performance," says Bill Zeitler, senior vice president and group executive, IBM Server Group. "This demonstrates how the power of technology can help drive bottom line results. Through our partnership, we are helping Colgate-Palmolive implement new technologies to gain competitive advantage."
Colgate-Palmolive says it was looking for a trusted partner, as well as industry-leading products and a robust technology roadmap. The company is also increasing the availability and flexibility of its SAP data by implementing storage area networks (SANs) supported by multiple Enterprise Storage Servers.
Colgate-Palmolive runs SAP software applications, including supply chain, order entry, accounts receivable, human resources and data warehouse, in 51 countries, representing 90 percent of the company's revenue. The company says SAP applications and technology infrastructure are partly responsible for the growth the company experienced from 1994 to 2001.
Included in Colgate-Palmolive's infrastructure is its business warehouse, a large-scale system that allows managers access to information from around the word, including the price of raw materials in dozens of markets. Running on IBM eServer and Enterprise Storage Servers, the system will ultimately contain 50 terabytes of business data.
IBM expects the systems running SAP to be fully installed by 2003.
