May, 2002 : Sun Extends Market Leadership in Unix Servers

📅 May 31, 2002 - Hardware developer Sun Microsystems (sun.com) announced on Thursday that it has bolstered its total market position, extending its lead in the UNIX market, where the company says it has remained number one while competition has remained flat or seen decreased market share since the fourth quarter of 2001, according to information from the first quarter 2002 Gartner Dataquest Worldwide server quarterly statistics database.

Gartner Dataquest, says Sun, reports that the company maintains the lead in UNIX market share worldwide in both shipments and revenue for the first quarter. With a 56 percent market share in shipments, Sun gained both year-over-year and sequentially, while its top three competitors declined. With 41 percent revenue market share, sun saw a 4 percent sequential increase, while its top three competitors declined or stayed the same.
"Worldwide and across the market, as well as in UNIX shipments and revenue, Sun is gaining market share while our competition is flat or declining," says Shahin Khan, Chief Competitive Officer, Sun Microsystems. "Our position is strong."
Sun says the new worldwide data follows similarly positive results from Gartner Dataquest relating to the US, EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) and Asia Pacific Regions.
In the US, Sun shipped more UNIX systems than all its competitors combined, while the company's Solaris Operating Environment and UltraSPARC-based systems experienced the highest year-over-year revenue growth among the top five IT vendors.
In EMEA, the company saw both revenue and shipment growth for the UNIX market. The report indicates that Sun delivers over half of the UNIX servers in the EMEA region.
Sun says it saw similarly strong growth in the Asia Pacific region, both year-over-year and sequentially in the UNIX market, remaining in the top position. The company increased its shipments in the reason, delivering more UNIX servers than its top three competitors combined.
The company says the worldwide market share gains are the result of the strength of its UltraSPARC III-based product line, which spans low to high-end systems.

📅 May 30, 2002 - Microsoft Issues Exchange 2000 Alert - A newly discovered vulnerability in Microsoft's Exchange 2000 could potentially cause e-mail servers to become unresponsive, the company said yesterday. The company said an attacker able to make a direct connection to an Exchange 2000 Server and pass raw mail messages directly to it could exploit the vulnerability and cause the system to crash. "This vulnerability does not enable the attacker to gain any privileges on the system, nor to read, send, or delete any user's mail on the system. After the message had been processed, the system returns to normal," the company said in an alert on its site. Microsoft has made a patch available to fix the problem.
