Jun 25, 2007 : IBM Builds Its Largest Facility

📅 - IBM (ibm.com) announced on Monday that it is spending $86 million and utilizing green technologies to expand its Boulder, Colorado data center, making the facility IBM's largest data center in the world.

The company says the project is part of IBM's goal to double its data center capacity by 2010 without increasing energy usage or carbon emissions. The upgrades involve high-density computing systems that use server and storage virtualization and energy-efficient power and cooling systems. This also fits in with the Project Big Green announcement IBM made in May, where it vowed to spend $1 billion in an effort to make corporate data centers more energy efficient.

The Boulder data center will increase to more than 300,000 square feet and be 45 percent more energy efficient than a typical IBM data center, due to efficient building designs, new lighting systems as well as highly efficient air conditioning and extensive use of virtualization, says the company.

Last week, AISO.Net completed a data center consolidation initiative using IBM technology resulting in a 60 percent reduction in overall power and cooling costs associated with the company's IT operations.
