Jul, 2003 : Report: Embedded Windows Faster to Deploy

📅 July 18, 2003 - Embedded Market Forecasters (embedded-forecast.com) released a report this week entitled ?Total Cost of Development: A comprehensive cost estimation framework for evaluating embedded development platforms.? The report, funded by Microsoft (microsoft.com), provides a cost-based evaluation for embedded device manufacturers considering whether to deploy the Windows embedded platform or embedded Linux.

An embedded system is a combination of hardware and software that is specifically designed for a particular kind of application device. Embedded operating systems are used in applications ranging from cars, handhelds, and set-top boxes to industrial control devices.
According to the report, Windows embedded projects were found to be 43 percent faster to develop, with Windows products taking 8.1 months to come to market and Linux products taking 14.3 months.
The report also found that an average Linux engineering team size was 14.2 people, compared with 7.9 for an embedded Windows project.
The average total cost of development for a Windows project was $480,000 (£301,820), versus $1.5m for a Linux project, making Windows 68 percent cheaper to deploy.
"Embedded Linux can be effective in distinct scenarios, but does not broadly translate into lower cost or faster development," said embedded technology authority Dr. Jerry Krasner, the author of the study. "Respondent data consistently demonstrated that the Windows embedded set of operating system and integrated development environments provided a clear and substantial time to market and cost advantage to developers.?
The Embedded Market Forecasters report surveyed 50 original equipment manufacturers using embedded Windows and 50 using embedded Linux.
