Jul, 2016 : Data Center Cooling Costs Reduced by Google by using AI


📅 - Google has recently implemented Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help reduce the cooling costs of data centers. They are using what is known as the “DeepMind” AI platform. Tihs platform came from a British AI company and beat out the South Korean Go champion Lee Se-dol this year.

Using DeepMind is expected to impact the energy costs of the data center and help on a global level. Google already purchases more renewable energy than any other company in the world and has made large investments in global projects for renewable energy.

📅 - Google Launches First Cloud Data Center on West Coast - Google's first cloud data center on the West Coast is now online, and it promises to provide US and Canadian users close to the coast a 30-80% reduction in latency. The West Coast center is located in Oregon. Previously, the closest center was in central US.

Now, cloud users in cities like Seattle, Vancouver, Portland, San Francisco, and LA should see major improvements in performance if they host in the new region.

📅 - Salesforce Acquires Data Management Startup Coolan - Salesforce announced on Thursday that they had acquired Coolan, a three-year-old Silicon Valley startup that helps companies manage data centers and hardware purchases using Big Data analytics. Many were confused about the acquisition, as this is Salesforce's first foray into the Big Data industry.

But Coolan's co-founder, Amir Michael, stated in a blog post that Coolan would help optimize Salesforce's infrastructure. Michael co-founded the Open Compute Project, Facebook's open source data center and hardware design initiative.
