Free publishing platforms like Medium, Blogger, LinkedIn, and more are simple to get started with and are designed well. They look great, but are they a good idea for professional creatives?

Writers, graphic designers, photographers, and the like may be tempted to do a “quick start” by setting up on a free platform that has everything included and ready to go. It's the website equivalent of the bed in a box. It might be enough for some, but for those who are serious about their online presence, free platforms just fall short.

But the ability to self-host your website opens up a whole new world of possibilities for creatives. That's not even mentioning the ownership of the content you place on the website – depending on the free platform used, some include content ownership in the fine print of their user policies. That can spell big trouble for creatives.
