NetNation defaults your domains to auto-renewals!

Recently, I helped one of my website clients with his website needs. In order to do so, he gave me control of his domain name panel. He had his domain names handled by NetNation… A domain and hosting company out of Vancouver BC. I switched the control of his domains to me so I could have complete control and be able to help with any possible things he may need help with.
NetNation likes to catch people un-aware when it comes to auto-renewing domain names!!! I am sure they make a TON of money from people like me who did not know that NetNation actually sets Auto-Renewal as DEFAULT to your domains when you register with them! You actually have to go into the control panel there and dig around to find the auto-renew area and manually un-check or “Opt-Out” of the auto-renewal. If you don’t opt-out, they will charge your account or credit card automatically for the renewal 30 days before the expiry date!! In fact, they bury this auto-renewal policy in their terms of service, and even though they SAY they sent me emails in advance, I have searched through every single email box I have and have not seen one single email about this in advance. I run my own email service and I know my email servers are working properly. In fact I have my spam detection turned off at the server level so I can go through everything myself manually.
There have been class action lawsuits against major computer anti-virus companies (I wont mentioned the actual names here, but if you google it, you will find it) in this matter and they have been heavily fined for this shady and slimy way of doing business.
In short, NetNation depends and hopes that people do not uncheck the auto-renewal checkbox so that they can hopefully get some extra money out of people who may have wanted to just let their domain names lapse and be canceled automatically. No reputable company would ever require its users to actually have to make the extra effort to opt-OUT of an auto-renewal. It should be the customers choice if they want to auto-renew, and give the customer the option to check the box if they want it. The box should NEVER be checked to auto-renew by default. That’s a scam. Plain and simple.
Even further to this, NetNation actually threatened me with collections (and therefore possible damage to my credit rating) if I did not pay the amount they auto-renewed without my permission! I have email records of all of this…
In the end, I lost. I just decided it was better for my own sanity to just give up and pay the 40 bucks to be done with them. I am way too busy and my life is already full of enough stress. So I basically paid them to leave me alone. Amazing right? But you can bet that I am going to spread the word of this crazy farce to as many people as possible, and I hope somehow everyone can get the news to stay away from them and their shady unfair policies.
The Cone Of Shame is awarded to NetNation this month. Stay away and don’t use their services if you value proper fair customer service.
