Good performance and service

I came from discountasp which had great customer service but the costs and ad-hoc nature of the features made me tired of spending $350 per year per site and still waiting and waiting for sites to fire up or uploads to finish when a hefty DLL such as Saxon or Enterprise Lib was involved. Arvixe was recommended to me by a colleague who switched over five of his sites and had no complaints. I was concerned about sharing resources and that it was unlimited for some plans which must at some point run up against hardware constraints, so I maintained caution when coming into this.

My experience so far is that the performance is at least double that of discountasp judging by page load times and file upload/downloads. Customer services was fast to respond and willing to help in whatever way was necessary to get my issues fixed, even when it was me who moved things around outside of their standard folder structures. Very pleased with the customer support so far.

The control panel is mediocre at best. Things such as application pools are not directly available with my shared plan, but creating IIS applications is confusingly called a virtual directory, which any developer knows is very different. An actual virtual directory has to be created by support, so I opted against using something that I could not administer myself. I.e. the labels are not exactly intuitive to a developer and the control panel itself is slow at times, particularly when manipulating the site details or changing permissions. IIS manager access is usable but as I have found with most providers, extremely limited as well. Can't create virtual directories or convert directories to applications using it at this time--must use the control panel for that as mentioned a moment ago.

Only other preference is that I enjoyed the SmarterMail interface for webmail as opposed to the Squirrel brand that Arvixe uses. Minor preference I think as it appears to have the standard webmail features as anyone else. A plus for them is that they offer secure IMAP/SMTP which not many others do, but you have to use the [hostingserver].arvixe.com address instead of your custom domain. I suppose if it was important enough I could invest in SSL certs for it myself, but I thought it was nice that it was available.

Finally, my experience has been with the .NET side of the website only thus far. Running Orachard CMS for one site and a completely custom site and application for the other. I have not changed the databases over yet, so I am hopeful that I will have a similarly good experience when I do in the next few weeks.

Overall I am pleased that I moved over to Arvixe and now have two sites up and running. Not as easy as it could be, but definitely not as difficult either. Performance alone was worth the switch to me and I also received quite a few unlimited features and half the price of my old provider as icing on the cake. Great customer support so far as well. Looking forward to working on the databases next in the hopes of a similarly good experience.
