I have been with 123-reg for just over three years now and like many of you have stated, until you have a problem, the service is fine.
I have about forty domain names with them and attempted to transfer two .com's to them in November of last year. They charged me the £11.74 each for the pleasure of seeing the two domain names in the 'pending transfer' screen and it failed on three occasions. I was allowed to retry at no extra cost, but today I look at my control panel to check the status, they've updated their transfers interface and my two domains have disappeared. No refund, no transfer, no clue as to what they have done.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. For fear of ranting too much, they took payment for purchase of a .co.uk domain in February which never appeared in my control panel, sending 5 emails at three weekly intervals (for fear of having my question ignored if I pestered too much) asking for a refund resulted in no response and no refund.
Then WebUser announced that 123-reg were opening a 'new' online support ticketing system - 'hoorah' I thought, whilst logging on. I posted a question regarding the refund for the .co.uk in mid April, checked this evening and the blasted question has been removed. No trace of it.
I'm not going to attempt to persuade or disuade anyone from choosing 123-reg as a domain registrar, oh, ok then, if you don't already have domain names with them then you are better off going elsewhere in my experience.
