Website setup, both for personal and business purposes, was designed to be seamless and automated. This allowed customers to begin uploading content to their websites within minutes of placing an order. However, domain names (e.g., yourName.com) typically required 24 to 72 hours for full propagation across the internet, though they were often ready sooner.
A key principle at Host Pond was their dedication to environmental responsibility.
Given the 24/7 nature of web hosting services, where websites must remain accessible at all times, energy consumption is a critical concern. Host Pond sought to minimize its environmental footprint by actively monitoring the power usage of its systems in real time. By evaluating performance relative to energy consumption, they optimized their systems for efficiency. Additionally, by consolidating processors and memory across virtual systems, they not only enhanced service reliability but also reduced energy waste by ensuring resources were used effectively.
History
Founded in July 2008 by Richard Powell, Host Pond LLC was the result of Powell's more than two decades of experience in web hosting and ecommerce. Prior to launching Host Pond, Richard worked in technical support for global companies and started his own website, webmd.com, in 1996. With over 20 years of experience, Richard provided extensive expertise in web hosting and technical services.
Since the founding of OP River Technologies in 2004, Richard had envisioned a physical storefront where customers could interact directly with the team. This dream became a reality with the opening of a storefront in Portland’s Sellwood district.
In-Person Support
One of Host Pond's unique offerings was its physical presence. Customers could visit their office in person to meet with staff and get support face-to-face, a rarity in the web hosting industry. This approach set them apart from many competitors who only communicated through digital channels.
Comprehensive Solutions
Host Pond aimed to support customers throughout the entire website creation and maintenance journey. They offered a wide range of options to suit any need, from budget-friendly $4.95 per month plans with free templates for personal websites, to custom web development and dedicated servers for large businesses. Through partnerships with designers, programmers, marketers, and other service providers, Host Pond ensured their clients had access to comprehensive solutions, even when they weren’t directly offered by the company.
Free Training
Starting in June 2009, Host Pond introduced free training sessions on website management, ecommerce, and basic computer skills. Customers were given priority when space was limited, but the training was available to everyone. With four training computers on-site and room for attendees with their own laptops, these sessions were a great resource for those looking to expand their knowledge.
While Host Pond is no longer in operation, its legacy in providing reliable hosting solutions and unique customer service is remembered by many.
